Kershaw County Accepts $195,000 Gift from the Mason Family for New Pickleball Courts

Lugoff, SC ·

Lugoff, SC — October 13, 2026

Kershaw County Council voted unanimously on Tuesday, October 13, to accept a $195,000 donation from Mark Mason Sr., Mark Mason Jr. and family. The gift will bring new pickleball courts to two county parks.

The donation is split between two sites:

  • KC West in Lugoff gets $105,000 to turn four tennis courts into pickleball courts. Two tennis courts will stay in place.
  • Boyd Young Park in Westville gets $90,000 to turn an unused tennis court into pickleball courts, bringing the sport to the northern part of the county.

To recognize the gift, Council named the pickleball courts at both parks the Mason Family Pickleball Complex. The middle court at KC West will be named the Beth Grammel Court, after a close family friend who loves the game.

Councilman Tomlinson made the motion and Councilman Catoe seconded it. “It’s unanimous,” Vice Chair Russell Brazell announced after the vote. “None opposed.”

Pickleball is one of the fastest-growing sports in the country, and these courts will give players of every age and skill level in Kershaw County a place to play close to home.

“Kershaw County is where our family put down roots, and this community has supported our businesses and our employees for nearly two decades,” said Mark Mason Sr. “We wanted to give back with something people of every age can enjoy together, and pickleball does exactly that.”

“Pickleball brings people together like few other sports. We’re excited that families in Lugoff and Westville will have great courts close to home,” said Mark Mason Jr. “We’re also honored that the middle court at KC West will carry Beth Grammel’s name. She’s a dear friend who loves this game.”
